Did You See The Size Of His Gun?!?! - By Mr. Wall

This article is written by Mr. Wall.  The article is that of his commentary and opinion alone.  Please respect that.

We’re a strange society; the general public shuns something that is the norm yet something that is completely unacceptable is socially okay.

I’m talking how violence is more acceptable than sex in the entertainment business and I’m through with hearing people trying to blame it on the bible thumpers. Sure they might have initiated it but at this point the general public is doing a fine job at perpetuating it.

It’s a pretty twisted thought process if you think about it; the simple truth is out there and for whatever reason we as a society like to pretend otherwise.

Between the ages of 12-15 most boys are looking up dirty pictures online and beating their meat… yup, I said it and if you try pretending you don’t I’m going to call you a straight up liar so don’t bother. Meanwhile girls are reading erotic stories disguised as romance novels, ladies, you can’t deny that either, I’ve skimmed through a couple of those books and those things go into details that would inspire a porn director.

By our late teens most of us are sexually active and by our mid-20’s a person who still hasn’t gotten any action is either a shut-in or doing it for religious purposes but for the most part they’re about as common as a dodo bird.

On the other hand, most of us have never beaten the crap out of/mutilated/dismembered/killed a person, unless of course we’re in law enforcement, the military or a violent criminal and even then it’s nowhere near as goriffic or common as what is portrayed in movies

So why do we continue to be leery of sex but not violence in film?

I’m constantly amazed whenever the issue pops up. One of the more blatant examples I’ve seen was with 28 Days Later, not the most violent movie but it definitely had some really memorable scenes. Like where Selena hacks up Mark after she sees him wounded or my personal favorite, where the soldier has his eyes gouged out! Brutal to say the least and probably a couple of things none of us have never done before.

And out of all that gore and brutality what was the thing I kept hearing about, as being “unnecessary” after leaving the theater, listening to others conversations and getting into discussions on message boards? The opening sequence in the hospital where we see Jim’s package for about a split second. There wasn’t anything weird or erotic going on, it was just a guy in the buff laying there and I’m sure, unlike all the violence acts in the movie, we’ve all been naked and if your female and over the age of 19 I’m sure you’ve also seen a penis or two in your lifetime. As for seeing a man naked being “unnecessary” well, I can think of a lot of violent scenes in movies that could be deemed unnecessary yet I don’t hear people raising a stink about them!

This carries over to the way violence and sex is portrayed in film. Once again, I have to reiterate that violence can be the most over-the-top brutal thing imaginable; it’ll actually gain bragging rights and competition. Just look at Saw, Hostel, Captivity and all those gore flicks that have, in recent years, been hitting theaters. I’m talking some really nasty torture scenes. Meanwhile sex has to be regulated, It’s has to be portrayed in this sensual form, slo-mo’d and mostly in missionary.

Right, like that’s the way we have sex

Of course anything else will get an NC-17 until the editors gouge the crap out of the scene and bringing it down to a lot of dry humping, heck even Team America had to edit a simulated sex scene with 2 anatomically lacking puppets . Could you imagine if violence in movies actually started getting rated the same way? Both versions of Dawn of The Dead would instantly be NC-17? We’re raised with the idea that violence is bad yet we’re disappointed when we find out that Alien vs. Predator is only PG-13.

Just like a lot of other movie goers I love hardcore visual violence on screen and this article isn’t about cutting back on it, no, instead I think that sex should be brought up to it’s level and if you think that’s a bad idea maybe we should instead have violence brought down to the level of sex in film?
