Your Best Critic For A Movie Is You! By Mr. Wall
This article is written by Mr. Wall. The article is that of his commentary and opinion alone. Please respect that.
There’s a not so little secret about critics that many people seem to over look: critics’ opinions are formed after seeing the movie.
Amazing, I know, but freakishly true.
Don’t misunderstand what I say, it’s ok to let out a groan or crack a few jokes after hearing about the casting, director, basis of the movie or seeing the trailer but to go on for days about how it’ll be the worst flick of the season/year/decade/ever without even seeing it is just moronic. The best (or worst) is the person who rants about how they are going to boycott the flick because they “know” how bad it will be.
These faux-critics might think they have an idea of how bad it’ll be but the truth is they are pretty much just talking out of their backside since all they are doing is basing it on a 90 second trailer and what other folks have told them, the latter of which is the most common thing that people do… regurgitate rather than actually know. These folks will tell me all the supposed faults of the movie and in the same breath tell me they’ve never seen it. Well gee, can we just shorten the rant down to “I let others tell me what to think” it would save a lot of time for both of us.
I understand that there are a lot of movies that just don’t look appealing and therefore a person doesn’t want to waist the time, effort and money on it but if that’s the case then a person just simply has to say so. A person’s opinion will have a lot more credit if they simply say “I’ll pass on that one” rather than rant to others how they’re angry towards a movie because of what they’ve heard or read.
Faux-Critics should really learn that “worse” and “never” are not figure of speeches but actual statements. Especially when I point out movies that are worse or when I find out that they ended up renting it. Of course the common thing for these people to do is say “that’s not what I meant”. Let me make a comparison here, when a person calls another a “moron” the person didn’t mean that as a figure of speech, nope, I’m pretty sure they meant that as an actual statement. Plus, it wasn’t like they only said it one time and moved on, no, this is usually something they can’t say enough.
Personally, I’m a lot more willing to listen to the person with firsthand knowledge rather than listening to the blathering idiot who is repeating what the other person said but in the end, the only person who knows I’m going to like a movie is me and that’s only after I’ve seen it.

OK……another bang up job by Mr. Wall. I don’t think I’ve ever been deterred from seeing a movie I wanted to see because of a bad review by a professional movie critic. This is my 2 cents….. a movie is best enjoyed by the individual who wants to see it because of an actor he/she likes, the storyline…etc. At the end of the day I will make MY OWN decision on whether I wasted my money or not. Some may not agree, but again this is just 2 cents worth of my wisdom. Great job Mr Wall. Thank you.
I agree with your fundamentals Mr. Wall. It’s still hard to see every movie out there, and at some point you have to budget your life. I try to watch reviews of movies I did like and find critics who’s tastes echo my own. This rule of thumb, just like reading Phil’s site helps me weed through the crap, and put my money where it counts.
I don’t expect a person to try and see every movie out there but at the same time I don’t want to hear them piss & whine about movies they don’t want to see with pseudo reviews (how does a person give a review on a movie they’ve never seen?)
