The Star Trek Reboot Proposal By JMS

Before JJ Abrams, before Erik Jendersen, there was J Michael Straczynski.  You'll recognize that name from the very popular Babylon 5.  Yes, JMS, is The Great Maker.  In 2004 he put in a proposal for a reboot of Star Trek TOS.  Today IESB released what the attempt was and the story behind the proposed series.  I'm seriously glad it didn't happen.  He even change the opening monologue slightly......SACRILEGE I SAY! Here is a little bit from that proposal.

We will start with a two-hour pilot that tells the story no one has ever seen: the circumstances that lead Kirk and McCoy (friends before this) to meet Spock for the first time. It will involve their discovery of a lost city on an uncharted world, nearly a million years old, and their encounter with the race that built it, a race long sought after by every civilized world for the tremendous advantages they could provide.

Along the way, we’ll learn how Kirk – the youngest Starship captain in the Federation – won command of the Enterprise in the course of a battle with another race in pursuit of that ancient mystery.

By the end of this pilot, Kirk, Spock and McCoy will be aboard the Federation’s Enterprise, poised at the edge of known space, poised to explore the billions of stars inside our galaxy.

We will embrace, truly, the famous Captain’s Log from nearly four-decades ago.“Space, the final &ontier. These are the voyages of the Starship

Enterprise, her five year mission: to seek out new worlds, and new

civilizations...to boldly go where no person has gone before...”

Now!  Don't get me wrong.  I'm sure that if made, it probably would have been cool and clever.  He's a proven writer with out any doubt.  Even thought thats true.... Star Trek is not a universe he should enter as a writer.

I'm honestly glad this proposal was not used.  I never like the idea of rebooting Star Trek, and thats what JMS wanted to do.  Sure JJ Abrams is doing the same thing, BUT he is also paying major respect to the established canon and continuity.  Yes I know, even the continuity of ST is flawed, but the over all story of the frachise is being respected.  I'm ok with that I think.
